Ensemble Shamaali
Ensemble Shamaali is a three-piece Middle Eastern music ensemble formed in 2022 comprised of Abdessamad Mason Zantow on the oud (Arab lute), lavta (Istanbul lute) and voice, Jared Morningstar on flute and voice, and Abdurrahman Peterson on bendir (frame drum) and percussion. Ensemble Shamaali performs modern interpretations of the Middle Eastern repertoire including muwashshah (medieval Arabo-Andalusian poems set to maqam music), samai (traditional maqam compositions), longa, sirto and mandira (Greek and Balkan dance songs), works by contemporary composers, and songs of the Sufi tradition.
